Vodka Polish National Liquor

Drinking alcohol is strongly connected to Polish traditions and customs. Vodka, next to the beer, is the most important liquor for Polish people.

The beginning of the history of vodka is not completely obvious. We can’t fully examine the circumstances of the origins of the distillation process. The first discoveries are dated for 3500 years b.c.

The beginning of distilling vodka in Poland is dated for the 13th century. In the beginning, it was used only for medicine, alchemy, and perfumes. The first half of the 16th century is the official beginning of using vodka as a recreational drink in Poland, but there is a high probability that Polish people were using it in this way before that time. Since then, vodka is firmly connected to Polish culture and celebrations.

There are miscellaneous ingredients that Polish vodka can be made of. Traditional vodkas are made out of grains (rye or wheat) or potatoes. There are also many kinds of Polish vodkas made out of various fruits such as plums or grapes.

Goldwasser Gdansk — Gold in the Bottle

Danziger Goldwasser is one of the best Polish vodkas. It’s strong herbal-root liquor based on an XVIth century-old recipe brought to Poland by Ambrosius Vermeulen so this recipe is old for over 420 years now. Due to the original mixture, it was a combination of 20 varied herbs, such as rosemary, juniper, cloves, cinnamon, coriander, and many others. The most extraordinary thing about this liquor is tiny flakes of 23-carat gold floating inside the bottle.

There is even a legend referring to the origins of this vodka. It says that inhabitants of Gdańsk had their part in creating this liquor by putting golden coins into Neptune’s fountain. Accumulated in the fountain gold ennobled water and turned it into perfect vodka. After that Neptune divided coins into gold flakes with his trident.

How to drink Polish vodka

As you already know, vodka is closely connected with Polish culture. We have plenty of traditions and customs that involve drinking vodka.

One of them is making toasts. There is no celebration that can exist without having toasts. Our toasts are similar to wishing someone or something well about adequate to the celebration topic.

There are also numerous customs on how you should and should not drink vodka. For example, if you get vodka in a small shot glass, you should always finish it — bottoms up! You also shouldn’t miss rounds if you’re drinking with other people. In old custom, it was received as an insult for a host.

Drinking vodka is usually accompanied by food. Before drinking it is advised to eat a fatty meal, so you will feel better when drinking. During drinking you can eat something small after every shot too, but only when it’s pure vodka. In Poland, you will find countless amounts of flavored vodkas. Those you should drink without eating not to spoil their great taste. Vodka should be cooled down well unless it’s premium or super-premium class — those should have room temperature while drinking.

Poles drink a lot of alcohol in general, but unlike other European countries, in Poland (similar to Russian people) we drink pale vodka, not just in mixed drinks.
